In reply to A. User's post on March 6, That response is like one from the proverbial accountant for it is precise but not very useful! I had the same message on my desktop after Windows XP did not close down without me cancelling a process dialogue box. When I subsequently tried to start windows it advised that it wanted activation.

There had been no hardware or software changes for months and the system had run OK 6 years prior to this event. When I accepted the request to re activate I was presented with a screen containing in ID that I had to type into my phone after calling a Microsoft support number. On completion the recorded message told me I might be a victim of fraud and to go to Microsoft's relevant website, without internet? I finally managed to get through to a human at Microsoft who asked for the original installation code.

When I had given this I received a new ID and the system was re-activated but the technical support could not help to explain why the problem occurred. However, the way to permanently overcome the problem is as I've said:.

Dial the number provided and type in the ID after pressing 1 or 2 on your phone as requested to identify if you are a business or home user. If it does not work find a way of getting through to Microsoft's support. Give them your original code from the software and follow instructions. Noel D Paton. Boot into "Safe Mode with Command prompt".
