How to install buried natural gas line

In all honesty they are products that I would use in my own home or the homes of my friends and family. Fireplace remotes by Skytech Remote Control Products. My wife loves this and it probably took all of 30 minutes to install.

Replace that wall switch or thermostat for your gas fireplace. Easy installation and instructions. In fact I wrote an article that covers the job pretty thoroughly I think.

Honeywell Thermostats. My favorite two Honeywell stats are the T6 Pro and the Pro series but their is a bunch to select from besides those two models. You can select WiFi that has the capability of operating your system from your smart phone no mater where you are. Honeywell tech support for homeowners is the best out there. Call them if you need at or comment below if you have questions. I am putting 4 tiny homes in a square with a court yard in the middle.

If I use iron pipe in each structure should I connect the structures with flexible tubing? Flex lines will break when flexed too many times. You have a very unusual situation. Best consult your building department. Be safe. Although it does require more tools and a little knowledge of copper lines and fittings, copper has been a main go to for gas lines for decades. The most cost effective method is black pipe from the tank or meter to inside the structure.

Just a thought, not complaining, you did a very good and informative write-up. My dad plans on installing a gas line on his own for the BBQ grill he just bought.

Thanks for this. Always check with local code enforcement. There is more that one type of PE pipe and they will have their use attached. Home Depot carries PE pipe for natural and propane. You probable already know these things. Thank you Chad! That sounds like the perfect solution. We are getting natural gas to our area and I would like to convert the fireplace to natural gas. I also want to replace my electric stove with a new gas one. I have spoken to a few plumbing companies and some say I can use the existing piping and some say I need to increase the size piping for natural gas.

Harry, there is a scientific way to know. A formula that they should be familiar with will tell you gas pipe size. There are also gas pipe sizing charts available online. Hi Chad! I have a not so common situation that I would like to ask you about. I live and work out of an RV fifth wheel and would like to install a line for a vent free propane fireplace. The distance from the RV tanks to the fireplace is about 6 feet. The furnace is even closer. I intend to use the fireplace for heat rather than the furnace.

That being the case, could I tap into the furnace line rather than run a separate line? And would it be better to use CSST over a flexible line?

What sort of connector would you recommend if tapping into the furnace line is do-able? Although building codes do not apply to an RV, I would want my line to be installed properly and up to code standards. I also understand that because my home is mobile and things get jostled around while on the road and that there may be other precautions I might need to take.

If you have any suggestions about that, they would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time and response!!! Jennifer, Somethings wrong with my comment section. I think the simple solution to your two heating systems would be to get a gas hose quick connect line from amazon or another vendor if you prefer.

It will allow you to move the gas line from one appliance to another without any wrenches. Thanks for the article. Is there a gas starving issue with installing an additional appliance needing gas? Like would there be an issue with not having enough pressure to supply the water, heater, and new gas stove top. Hi Nick, Yes adding appliances to an existing line can create a starving situation for all the appliances. One thing you may consider is a gas range with an electric oven.

We have one of those in my house. Thank you very much for this article! Instead I want to use propane. I already ordered the insert, logs, fan and trim and spoke to the county regarding a permit to run my own propane line.

The plan is to have the tank next to the chimney outside and drill thru the brick into the firebox. What material would you recommend? In some cases, plastic piping has been allowed. Plastic piping, however, is primarily used in commercial projects. Before installing a gas line, you should always find out what materials are accepted in your area. Knowing where your gas line and shut off valve is in a house is essential, especially if you ever need repairs or there is a leak in the gas line.

Anytime you plan to install or repair a gas line, you should shut the gas off first. Finding the main shut off valve for a home gas line is relatively easy, as the main valve should be next to the gas meter. The main shut off valve is also known as the street-side valve.

Rather, shut the gas off at the house-side valve. The house-side valve is usually located near where the line first enters the house. While home supply stores and hardware stores may have kits available to connect gas lines to appliances, you must make sure the fittings are the right size. Always make sure to shut off the gas before connecting fittings to the line.

Gas line for house Natural gas is a great resource for energy. How much does it cost to put in a gas line? The ditch should always be as straight as possible. If bends and corners are unavoidable, be sure to dig them in as large of a radius as possible to ensure there is no undue pressure on the polyethylene tubing.

For comparison purposes, we will often tell customers to lay a garden hose down in a 12 foot diameter circle. The 12 foot diameter circle represents the maximum radius of a corner for an underground gas piping application utilizing poly tubing. The polyethylene underground gas piping must remain at minimum 18 inches below grade throughout the duration of the ditch. At both ends of the ditch, a hardened anodized steel riser will be used to transfer from the polyethylene tubing 2 standard npt pipe threads above ground.

These risers are a large portion of the overall material cost associated with underground gas piping. The polyethylene tubing is relatively inexpensive per foot, however depending on the diameter of the tubing, the anodized gas risers can be somewhat spendy.

The gas risers are essentially a 7 to 8 foot length of pipe bent into the shape of an l. They cannot be shortened or modified in any way.

Therefore it is recommended to dig the last seven to eight feet of both ends of the ditch down further past the 18in minimum to a depth of 22 to 24 in which will keep the gas riser from unnecessarily protruding above the ground level.

We also recommend that the last several feet of both ends of the ditch be dug perfectly straight so there is no undue pressure on the gas fitting located on the end of the Riser Underground. The polyethylene tubing is truly the best choice. You must install a yellow solid core wire for the entire length of the ditch, and leave the wire exposed above ground level on at least one end of the ditch. The tracer wire is how the underground gas piping location will be identified in the future and is required by code.

We typically leave excess tracer wire so there is no chance it accidentally gets buried below grade. We get a lot of questions about the required diameter of pipe and gas sizing requirements for underground gas piping for a Firepit. This is a massive BTU load! In comparison, your average gallon water heater only requires 40, BTU. We often get asked if a new underground gas piping line to a Firepit can be routed from an existing BBQ stub out.

The answer Due to the high BTU demands of most Firepits, we almost always need to begin the new underground gas piping line directly from the gas meter to ensure the Firepits high BTU requirements will be met. If your gas meter is in a location that prohibits underground gas piping, we can use a combination of exposed black Iron mounted to the side of your home to get past any obstacles such as sidewalks or driveways that might make direct burial underground gas piping from the gas meter not possible.
