Samba windows 7 slow

What are your experiences? Any hints or ideas? Friday, May 8, AM. OMG yes! What is this embedded protocol and how can I fix it?? Samba and windows 7 are not compatible!

My internet is quite fast too. Wednesday, October 7, AM. I am finding the same thing. I have my mail profile for thunderbird on the samba share and it takes nearly 5 minutes to open vs.

If Microsoft does not provide a solution or samba I am going back to Vista. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google. Sign up using Facebook. Sign up using Email and Password. Post as a guest Name. Note that this is the maximum size of SMB requests that Samba will accept, but not the maximum size that the client will accept. The client maximum receive size is sent to Samba by the client, and Samba honors this limit.

It defaults to bytes the maximum , but it is possible that some clients may perform better with a smaller transmit unit. Trying values of less than is likely to cause severe problems. In most cases the default is the best option. If you set the log level also known as debug level higher than 2, then you may suffer a large drop in performance. This is because the server flushes the log file after each operation, which can be quite expensive. The read raw operation is designed to be an optimized, low-latency file read operation.

A server may choose to not support it, however, and Samba makes support for read raw optional, with it being enabled by default. It might lower, raise, or not affect your performance. Only testing can really tell. The write raw operation is designed to be an optimized, low-latency file write operation. A server may choose to not support it, however, and Samba makes support for write raw optional, with it being enabled by default. Some machines may find write raw slower than normal write, in which case you may wish to change this option.

Slow logins are almost always due to the password checking time. Using the lowest practical password level will improve things. Often a speed problem can be traced to the client. I am running Gentoo on my server and Samba 2.

How much RAM does the server have? Another thing to look out for are directories with a bunch of images. If you're using thumbnail view in Windows explorer it will try to build a thumbnail preview of every picture.

Server has 8 gb RAM. And I have only set up one share and it doesn't have any images to speak of in the root of the share. Just getting a directory listing takes forever and more ofen than not, times out. If I go into a directory with only a few files, speed seems fine. One last issue I've run into is a directory with a lot of executable files, such as Windows program installers. The problem here there is with the antivirus on the Windows clients scanning everything on the network share each time you try to look at it.
